  • PostDate:2018-04-02

A delegation of the South Korean National Assembly's Committee for Gender Equality and Family visited the Control Yuan on March 30. The delegation included Committee Chairperson Nam In-Soon, as well as In Jae-Ken, Kwon Mi-Hyuck and Jung Choun-Sook. They were received by Control Yuan President Chang Po-ya, CY Members Wang Mei-yu, Liu Tien Chiu-Chin, Jane Y. W. Chiang, Chang Jen-hsiang and Fang-Wan Yang and Deputy Secretary-General Hsu Hai-Chuan.
The two sides engaged in open and friendly exchanges of views on a range of topics, including women’s political participation as well as the supervision of government. The visiting dignitaries praised the Control Yuan’s balanced gender ratio after President Chang explained that 14 of the CY’s 29 members, half of its directors and more than half of its employees are female.
During the discussion, President Chang also gave a brief introduction of the CY’s powers and responsibilities, as well as its performance over the past year, including impeaching 32 government officials and proposing 99 corrective measures. She pointed out that the CY’s investigations, including follow-up monitoring and improvement recommendations to various government agencies, helped boost state coffers by some NT$6.5 billion.
The dignitaries stated they were impressed by the comprehensiveness of the Control Yuan’s powers and responsibilities, noting that in South Korea, the responsibility of receiving and handling people’s complaints, conducting audit of government, and ensuring protection of human rights are handled by three separate bodies, namely the Anti-corruption and Civil Rights Committee, the Board of Audit and Inspection, and the National Human Rights Commission, respectively.
The visitors also expressed much interest regarding the Control Yuan’s exercising of its supervisory powers, including the types of challenges it faces, who supervises the CY members, and how the supervisory role is divided with the Legislative Yuan. They also highly praised the Control Yuan as an important institution for ensuring clean government.
