  • PostDate:2010-11-23

President of Control Yuan, Wang Chien-shien, met Dr. Sergio Fernando Morales, the General Prosecutor for Human Rights and Ms. Licda. Socorro Quezada, Secretary of the Department of Human Rights of Guatemala, on November 17, 2010. Both parties enthusiastically exchanged views and opinions during the meeting.
President Wang mentioned that Taiwan has adopted the five-power political system. The duties and responsibilities of the Control Yuan played a crucial function to supervise the government, a fact which can be seen from the 400 employees recruited by Control Yuan, and 900 employees by its subordinate department, the Auditing Department. Taiwan and Guatemala have always maintained a mutual relation of good will, and the visit by Dr. Morales offers a chance for both countries to exchange opinions.
80 % of the cases tackled by the Control Yuan are related to the issue of human rights, and the Control Yuan has consistently paid much attention to the rights of foreign workers and its aboriginal people. Dr. Morales was interested in the achievements of Taiwan in respect to the protection of aborigines, because aborigines is the majority ethnic group in Guatemala; however, the majority ethnic group is not well protected in the areas of the right in political participation and working opportunities. At the same time, the government of Guatemala has put great efforts on the promotion of hygienic and security issues, an accomplishment which Taiwan can learn from Guatemala.
Dr. Morales reaffirmed the functions of the Control Yuan and the ROC’s system of human rights. He was also impressed by the hospitality of R.O.C. on Taiwan following the warm invitation extended by Taiwan representative in Guatemala, and he has witnessed the happiness and energy of Taiwanese people.
After the visit, Dr. Morales and President Wang took several pictures to mark the occasion.
